Goodbye 2018…

We cannot believe how quickly 2018 has come and gone. It feels like just last week that we started the year and suddenly we are planning our Christmas break again.

Looking back, we realize how blessed we are and how much we have accomplished this year, all because of your continued support and trust in our services.

As you may know, we have grown quite a bit this year and have added a number of extra services through Live Consulting, ExtracTank, METSA and Chim Chimney and these have severely tested our resolve… but we are glad to report it is still smooth sailing.

Here is a quick overview of what we got up to 2018…

  • Over 500 Canopies left sparkling clean through Extractor Hoods
  • Over 50 extraction related installations of various sizes

  • Medium and large tanks serviced monthly through ExtracTank (Over 400 for the year)

  • 315 Chimney’s Serviced through Chim Chimney

  • Over 100 mystery phone calls and 11 Mystery Visits to Hotels, Lodges and Resorts and a Tourism research report through Live Consulting

  • Food and Beverage and Cookery Training for numerous clients through METSA

There were a few  highlights of the year but if we have to pick one, it would be the day we were hanging off of ropes outside Nelspruit, cleaning windows at the University of Mpumalanga. How fun is our job!

2018 has really been a great year and we are so thankful for all the support we have received! Our ‘back end’ also got some upgrades with our Automated Scheduling System, reporting software and a whole new approach to customer interaction and feedback. (We hope you have noticed 😉 )

Who Manages Your Training?

The importance of managing staff training and development cannot be overstated. The SETA regulations, SARS Skills Levy, BEE score card and EE compliance issues are all impacted by proper skills planning. Unfortunately many organisations cannot afford a full time training manager. So, what to do?

Many organisation appoint a ‘once off’ Skills Development Facilitator (SDF) to assist with the annual WSP/ATR submissions. Although there is value in doing this, the SDF may not fully understand what the business requires w.r.t skills development and may only be submitting for compliance reasons.

The solutions lies in finding a person who is as passionate about your people as you are.

METSA now offers a full training management service with fees from as little as R2 000.00 per month*. Our service includes (but is not limited to):

  • Annual Skills Gap Analysis and Training Needs Analysis
  • Staff performance plans
  • Workplace Skills Plan development and SETA submission
  • Annual Training plan submission
  • Monthly monitoring and evaluation of training plan
  • Sourcing of quotations and training providers
  • Management of training administration
  • SETA Liaison and reporting
  • Employee inductions
  • Training contracts
  • EE / BEE Assistance and advice
  • Plan, coordinate and direct all training activities
  • Monitor training effectiveness and measure ROI
  • Management of training budgets

Why use us?

  • We have 14 years experience in Education, Training and Development
  • Over 3000 students registered and trained in the past
  • Over 100 WSP/ATR submissions with various SETA’s
  • We’ve worked with some of the largest hotel, retail and restaurant groups in the country
  • Fully Accredited with CATHSSETA (so we understand the back-end)
  • We’ve secured over R1 Million in training funding for clients
  • We’ve run mentorship programmes for 15 SMME’s
  • We’ve managed small and large training projects in urban and rural areas
  • We have an absolute passion for the development of people

Let us take the headache away and help you navigate your way around training and development.

Chim Chimney, Chim Chimney

Our team recently braved the freezing temperatures of Dullstroom to assist the towns folks with much needed De-carbonizing Chimney Sweeps. We spent two days in this beautiful town and discovered that chimney maintenance is grossly undervalued in our country.

We decided to go to Dullstroom after receiving more than 40 enquiries for chimney sweeps through our Dullstroom agent. Here are some of the problems we encountered:

On the first day we met a client who was complaining that the smoke from their fireplace sometimes blew into the house. Our initial suspicions were that this may be due to bats or a bird nest inside the chimney. We inspected the fireplace and the chimney and didn’t notice anything broken or out of place. It wasn’t until our team opened up the chimney that we found the problem:

Chimney with insulation trapped inside
Chimney after removing insulation

A previous attempt at cleaning the chimney resulted in the roof insulation getting trapped inside the chimney. This created an airflow problem and caused the smoke to billow into the house on occasion. This was obviously a huge fire hazard as well! Our team quickly went to work and made sure that the insulation was clear of the edges and that the chimney had a clear vent. Potential crisis averted!

The next day our team was met with ice, freezing temperatures and a host of chimney’s to clean. We sprang to work and managed to assist all of our clients for the day.

The vehicles did not like the cold
Evidence of the cold
All of that from one chimney?

One of the last chimney’s we did on the day provided evidence of just how important regular chimney sweeping really is. The client was very surprised when this mountain of soot was cleaned from her chimney.

Apart from the obvious fire risk, this carbon build up also prevents proper air flow and may result in smoke coming back into the room. Not pleasant for anyone.

Our team arrived home and was greeted with many more enquiries for chimney sweeps. We’ll be back Dullstroom, We’ll be back.

Penny Wise and Pound Foolish…

Unfortunately, the saying is true. We have seen this time and again with poor installations and cheap cleans that ‘promise’ to be worth it but end up being a fly by night. So, let’s tackle this sensitive issue of cheap prices for canopy cleaning.

We are aware of organizations moving into the lowveld and offering rock bottom prices for canopy cleaning. Before you decide that price is king, consider the following questions:

Are you receiving quality?

The short and definite answer is a resounding NO! After 10 years in the industry we can confidently tell you that an organization that offers cheap prices are not cleaning your canopy and ducting to the standard that it is supposed to be. The SANS act clearly provides the guidelines for a ‘proper’ canopy clean and stipulates the cleaning of the fan, ducting and the canopy itself, ‘TO THE BEAR METAL’. Our experience has shown us that cheap cleans will only clean your canopy and, maybe, the fan. The ducting is seldom touched, leaving you with the fire risk.

Will your insurance pay out if there is a fire?

Well, probably not. A fire inspector will evaluate the cause of the fire and will also look for possible sources of fuel that would have fed the fire. One of the areas the inspector looks at is the internal ducting. If this has not been cleaned, insurance will probably not pay out. Cheap cleans will most likely not clean internal ducting. This can also lead to other issues such as oil leaks. If you are unsure, ask for before and after photos to ensure the ducting has in fact been cleaned.

What if there is a breakdown?

The biggest challenge with sourcing cheap cleaning is that most of these organizations are not locally based. If you do have a breakdown (or any other issue during the clean) there is no backup as the managers and offices are in a different province. We have been called out many times before to assist with repairs caused by other organizations, leaving the customer with a cost that is double or triple the cost of the original clean.

How long ‘should’ a clean normally take?

Experience has told us that the time it takes to properly clean a canopy and ducting is determined by the size of the canopy. The following serves as a guideline:

  • Small canopy: 3 – 5 hours, 4 people cleaning
  • Medium canopy: 4 – 6 hours, 4 people cleaning
  • Large canopy: 8 – 10 hours, 6 people cleaning

Cheap cleans are normally done within 2 – 3 hours, irrespective of the size of the canopy. It is impossible to clean properly within these timeframes.

There are probably another 100 reasons to not buy cheap, but we are sure you understand our concern. Ultimately, the responsibility of ensuring the canopy, ducting and fan are clean lies with the owner of the organization.

Protect yourself, your staff and your business and choose a canopy cleaning company that is reputable and does the job right!

Let us know what you think! Comment below.

Do you really need a canopy clean?

Well, yes.

This is a fan that we recently removed from a client’s premises. This fan has not been cleaned in a very long time. The fan obviously does not work anymore and the client had to replace it at high cost.

Canopy and ducting cleaning is not only a legal issue according to the SANS act, but also saves you money in the long run. Regular cleaning should be seen as preventative maintenance that promotes longevity in your ducting, fan and canopy.

Not cleaning your ducting promotes a build up of grease and oil that magnifies your fire risk ten fold. A canopy/ducting fire cannot be easily doused and will most probably result in a significant loss of equipment.

Our services ensure that your canopy, ducting and fan last longer and are always 100% clean.
